How are crown and bridges made?
In order to fit a crown or bridge over a tooth, the tooth (or teeth) must be reduced in size so that the crown or bridge will fit properly. After reducing the tooth/teeth, an impression will be taken to produce an exact replica of the shape of the tooth.
Using this impression, dental technicians can then make your crown and bridge, in the material you and your dentist have chosen. A temporary crown or bridge will be put in place to cover the prepared tooth while the permanent crown or bridge is being made. When the permanent crown or bridge is ready, the temporary is removed and the new crown or bridge is cemented over your prepared tooth or teeth.
Types of crown and bridges
The different types of crown and bridges include gold alloy, ceramic (tooth coloured) or ceramic fused to metal. Each of these types has their own individual strengths and weaknesses. Depending on your individual goals for treatment as well as consideration of your particular case, different materials will be recommended. After in depth discussion, you can make a well-informed decision about which type of crown best fit for you.
