Minor surgical procedures are occasionally performed for removal of badly broken down teeth or impacted teeth that cannot be removed with normal extraction. Minor oral surgery is also done for placement of dental implants or removal of any oral pathology and structures affecting form and function of the individual. In our daily practice, it is mostly done for removal of impacted wisdom teeth and placements of dental implants.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are third molars that appear in teenager or young adult. When correctly aligned and when sufficient space is available in our jaw, they don’t cause any issues. However, in some cases our jaws may not have enough room or these teeth grow sideways and be ‘impacted’.

Why extract your wisdom teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth may be partially emerged, showing only the crown of the tooth or never emerging through the gums at all. If the tooth is erupted halfway and is blocked by the second molar, there is a high chance for food particles to be trapped between the two teeth and cause problems in the future. As wisdom tooth is at the back of the mouth, it makes it challenging to keep it clean as well. These factors make it favorable for bacteria to form causing dental decay or painful gum diseases. If left untreated, bacteria in these pockets may not only affect the wisdom teeth, but also the adjacent second molar.
It is always best to remove impacted wisdom teeth as early as you can as extractions are often easier the younger we are. The bone is less dense and recovery and healing after surgery is relatively less eventful earlier in life.

Removal of wisdom teeth

During the initial visit, we will do a comprehensive dental examination and take some X-rays of your mouth to assess the condition of your wisdom teeth. Surgery may be recommended for impacted wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth surgery is a minor surgical procedure performed mostly under local anesthesia.
